The total area is 260 square meters comprising two separate prayer rooms, one for men and one for women on the ground floor. In the basement, there are the ablution area, toilets, showers and a kitchen. Because the mosque is situated very close to Essen city center and the University of Essen-Duisburg, it is quite busy for the five daily prayers where students, workers and residents from all nationalities congregate to fulfill their religious duties. Between 150 and 200 Muslim brothers and sisters attend Altaqua mosque on a daily basis. For Jomoaa (Friday) prayers, the mosque must use the kitchen in the basement to accommodate the large number of Muslims which exceeds 300 brothers and sisters.

Our Mission

Altaqua mosque is much more than a mosque. It strives to avail the services of an Islamic Center as well as a Social Center with an array of activities. 160 students from the age of six attend the Saturday and Sunday Schools to learn Arabic, Quran, Fiqh and Sira. Three days a week, adults men attend the Quran School to memorize the Holly Quran. The Sisters have their own study circles to include the main components of Islamic studies and Quran memorization. An important aspect of the sisters’ circles is assisting new reverts to Islam.
Socially, Altaqua mosque is active in the local community. For example, it sets good examples by participation in the neighborhood clean-up.
